Shawn Levy recently gave an interview to The associated press to evoke Deadpool and Wolverine. The director explained in particular that the feature film was constructed so that spectators could go and discover it without necessarily having seen the other MCU films :

Deadpool and Wolverine it will then stand out from previous MCU films. It is also the first feature film after the new turning point initiated by Maison des Idées. “An adventure centered on two characters”

It’s the third Deadpool movie, but it’s not Deadpool 3. It’s about something different, which is really Deadpool and Wolverine. And this film doesn’t try to copy the first two. They were amazing, but this is really a two-character adventure.
