George Lucas celebrated by Cannes and his friend Francis Ford Coppola
The 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival offered its share of emotions on the screens, both in competition and in the parallel sections. Several films stood out, and finally it did Anora by Sean Baker who won the Palme d’Or our opinion here(). French filmmakers also stood out in this competition, with Coralie Fargeat receiving the award Screenplay Award For The substance (our opinion here) e Emilia Perez (here is our opinion) by Jacques Audiard at the exit of the Croisette with the Female Actor Award and the Jury Prize during the closing ceremony.

But the most beautiful emotion was undoubtedly found in reality, offered by two very real characters present in the flesh at this Cannes Film Festival: George Lucas AND Francis Ford Coppola. In fact, the first was there to receive a Honorary Golden Palm, distinguishing his entire formidable career. The second was present with his film Megalopolis, selected in competition. George Lucas, still very influential and active as a producer, has not directed a film since 2005 and Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. Francis Ford Coppola, personally awarded during his career as five Oscars and two Palme d’Orhe finally managed to realize his great project Megalopolisin development for several decades.
A touching embrace between two legends
Avoided by critics who gave it a very mixed, if not negative, reception Megalopolis (here is our opinion), Francis Ford Coppola could have left the Croisette the day after the presentation of his new film. But he was there on Saturday 25 May, the closing day of the Cannes Film Festival, to present the Palme d’Honneur to George Lucas himself. The two men, great figures of New Hollywood, have known each other since their debut in cinema and both co-founded the production company American Zootrope in 1969.

The global commercial success of the saga Star Wars made George Lucas an outstanding technician of 20th century cinema. And one of the richest men in Hollywood. While Francis Ford Coppola has established himself as a legendary director, a critical favorite especially thanks to the saga The Godfather, Secret conversation AND Apocalypse now. Each in their own way, they are responsible for some of the greatest sensations in the history of cinema.
So when 85-year-old Francis Ford Coppola appeared behind 80-year-old George Lucas, who turned with his arms wide open and the two men embraced, the emotion reached its peak and everyone’s eyes at least became misty. (video below).
