Damaged : What is this thriller with Vincent Cassel and Samuel L. Jackson?
When we look at the careers of Vincent Cassel and Samuel L. Jackson, we can say that the two actors have nothing left to prove for a long time. However, even these two famous actors can sometimes make bad choices. And visibly Damaged it was one. However, on paper, seeing the French actor side by side with the interpreter of Nick Fury in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) was quite tempting. Vincent Cassel having already proven his worth abroad (saga Of the ocean, Black Swan, Westworld…). It adds to this a detective novel which had everything to please fans of the genre.
Damaged in fact it follows Dan Lawson (Samuel L. Jackson), a Chicago police officer contacted by the Scottish authorities to investigate a series of murders. There he will have to team up with Walter Bravo (Vincent Cassel). Lawson quickly realizes that these murders follow the same pattern as the ones on which he had investigated five years earlier.

Although investigative films about serial murders are rarely innovative compared to the classics Seven (1995), sometimes there were some very positive surprises. The public also often remains fond of the genre and films that may have gone unnoticed manage to regain ground on the platforms. But in the case of Damagedwhich just arrived First Videoit could be more complicated.

“90 minutes of boredom”
Indeed, after having been there filmed in Scotland between March and May 2023, Damaged it was released in the United States a year later. But this release was not memorable, as only a handful of theaters hosted the film, which was also entitled to a digital release, which is never reassuring. And this was confirmed by the very negative feedback from the press and from the rare spectators who discovered the thriller. ON Rotten tomatoes, Damaged poster 29% positive reviews among critics, e 16% for the public. A very low score plus some unattractive items.
For Hollywood reporter, Damaged offers “90 minutes of boredom”, whileSea Corridordoes not mention “a mystery that makes no sense“. And for The movie Yapeven the acting duo can’t save the film: “Samuel L. Jackson and Vincent Cassel wallow and wander in this boring, confusing serial killer hunt set in Scotland. It feels like an imitation of ‘other better psychological thrillers.’
To see if Prime Video subscribers will be more forgiving. But even in France the opinions so far have not been very bright. ON AlloCiné, Damaged show to this day an average of 1.5/5 based on 48 viewer ratings.
