In the autobiography It’s So Easy: And Other Lies, Duff McKagan revealed how they got in touch to use his name for a beer brand

Iconic bassist of the American hard rock band Armas e Rosas, Duff McKagan opined how those responsible for The Simpsons should admit how they were inspired by his name to create the Duff Beerfavorite beer brand of homer Simpson (Dan Castellaneta).

It is worth remembering that this is not the first time that the artist criticizes the animation created by James L. Brooks, Matt Groening It is Sam Simon. In autobiography It’s So Easy: And Other Lieslaunched in 2011, McKagan claimed how a “production company working on a new animated series” got in touch between 1988 and 1989 to ask if they could use the name Duff for a fictional beer brand.

At the time, the bassist believed that the production in question would be low budget and would not be successful. So much so that he laughed at the request and replied that there would be no “problems” with the animated series using his name. However, he began to realize how Duff gained considerable importance in production, with several licensed merchandise. The screenwriters deny this story.

Now, during an interview with Stereogum, Duff McKagan was asked again about The Simpsons and reiterated his stance on history, and revealed how he proclaimed himself “King of Beers,” so much so that he wore a Budweiser belt with that slogan during shows.

“That’s the situation. So I was Duff, the Beer King. But this is 1988, 1989, and our management, I remember they called me and said some artsy cartoon wants to use my name as a beer, like a college artsy cartoon,” he recalled. “There weren’t any adult cartoons at that time. “

I didn’t know about branding or anything like that, but that show took off. And then they started selling merchandise and stuff. I never went after him [Matt Groening]but I thought, ‘Hey, motherfuckers,’ you know?

“So they have business experience and they’re going to tell you that’s not true,” he continued. “But if you just do your own math, look when they started with the Beer King, and I had my Beer King belt that I wore all the time.” Finally, the interviewer asked the bassist if the animation producers should admit the inspiration, to which he replied: “They should. I’m not going to ask them for money.”
