Available on Netflix: impossible not to cry at the end of this film

10 years after its release, Our opposite stars arrives on Netflix

After the laughter with Fiasco and shouts them with Under the Seinewith which Netflix decided to make its subscribers cry Our opposite stars (2014). And this, from this Saturday 15 June at exactly 00:01. If the streaming platform usually puts its new programs online at the beginning of the day, this time the service with the red logo didn’t want to waste any time. The announcement of this addition obviously pleased those who had read it the novel of the same name by John Green (2012)and those who discovered this adaptation directed by Josh Boone and published 10 years ago now. A film that shocked more than one person at the time.

As a reminder, Our opposite stars follows Hazel Grace Lancastera 16 year old girl with of a serious illness. In fact, after surviving cancer three years earlier, metastases appeared in her lungs and put her on hold again. Although her condition may worsen every day, she tries to live a normal life. To help her overcome this test, her mother pushes her to follow her a support group for sick young people. This is where you will meetAugust, who is in remission from bone cancer. An illness that cost him his right leg and saw his dream of becoming a basketball player fade away.

As the two boys begin to get closer, Hazel immediately puts a “stop”, explaining to Augustus that they absolutely shouldn’t fall in love given their more than uncertain future. Except the boy doesn’t intend to stop there. Better yet, she will do everything to help the young woman realize her dream of meeting the author of her favorite book during a trip to Amsterdam…

A drama that shocked the public

“Small” independent film made with a budget of 12 million dollars and young actors at the beginning of their career, Our opposite stars was a huge successreporting more than $300 million at the worldwide box office. The feature film was later revealed Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort – although both had achieved another success a few months earlier Divergent (2014). But the impact of Our opposite stars remains superior. Because the film addresses strong themes, around love and illness, necessarily subject to emotion. Furthermore, the feature film sheds light on people suffering from serious illnesses by taking, for once, the point of view of two young people.

The film’s story is all the more powerful and touching because it is based on the life of a real teenager, named Esther, met by the author of the novel in 2009. The latter suffered from thyroid cancer and published videos on her YouTube channel to raise public awareness of her disease. John Green then befriended her and remained in contact with her for a year beforehand who died at 16. The novelist therefore wanted to pay homage to her through the character of Hazel.

The ending of the film is also tragic, but slightly different. We won’t reveal the details here to avoid spoiling those who haven’t seen it yet Our opposite stars. But we can assure you that you will not emerge unscathed.
