House of the Dragon season 2: the long-awaited return
Nearly two years after the first season aired, the Targaryens are back for the rest House of the Dragonthe prequel to game of Throneswhich traces the fall of the famous dynasty that ruled Westeros with its imposing dragons.
The first season covered approximately two decades, from the coronation of King Viserys Targaryen, to his death, and the beginning of the War of Succession between Rhaenyra’s clanhis eldest daughter, to that of Alicent Hightower, his second wife.
The finale of the last episode of the first season closed with the hateful look of Rhaenyra, who had just learned that her nephew Aemond Targaryen had killed her son Lucerys, with the help of her dragon Vhagar, as well as having discovered that his other nephew, Aegon, had been proclaimed king in his place thanks to a maneuver by Alicent.
All the lights were then green (well, rather black) for a season 2 that would finally enter what we call the Dance of Dragons, the bloody confrontation between the green clan (Alicent) and the black clan (Rhaenyra). And the least we can say is that the start of season two doesn’t disappoint.
An already shocking first episode
Airing tonight in the United States (and in France on the new Max streaming platform), the first episode of the second season of House of the Dragon left little doubt about its outcome with an ambiguous title: Discussions for discussions.
Then, in the last half of the episode, Daemon Targaryen pays two men (known as Blood and Cheese in George R.R. Martin’s work) to assassinate Aemond Targaryen (second son of Alicent Hightower) and thus avenge Lucerys’ death.
However, not finding him in the corridors of King’s Landing, they choose to savagely kill (by beheading) Helaena’s child and his brother Aegon II, little Jaehaerys (Alicent’s nephew), after asking Helaena to name who the boy was (he had twins, a boy and a girl) to make sure they would eliminate the heir.
A shocking sequence, in line with what game of Thrones we were used to (no one is safe, not even children), and that sets the tone for the rest of the season which should also contain epic fights between the dragons of the two clans. The revenge has just begun.
