Bohemian Rhapsody: the king of the box office

Published in 2018, Bohemian Rhapsody is a musical biopic directed by Bryan Singer and co-directed by Dexter Fletcher. The film celebrates the life and career of Freddie Mercury, the legendary singer of the band Queen, played by Rami Malek. The latter’s critically acclaimed performance made it worth his while the Oscar for best actor. The film chronicles the rise of the band from their inception to their historic performance at the 1985 Live Aid concert, exploring Mercury’s personal challenges, including his battle with AIDS.

The film reached unprecedented heights at the box office for a musical biopic. So, he reported more than 910 million dollars worldwide, setting a new record for this film genre. This phenomenal success places it at the top of the highest-grossing musical biopics of all time Elvis ($288 million) and NWA: Straight from Compton (202 million).

Despite the chaotic production

The production of Bohemian Rhapsody it was not without difficulties. Bryan Singer, the original director, was fired before filming was completed because of him problematic behavior on set and his repeated absences. Dexter Fletcher was brought in to complete the film’s production. These production issues caused delays and tension within the team. Despite this, the film managed to overcome these obstacles to become a huge commercial success.

In addition to the Oscar for best actor awarded to Rami Malek, the film won three other prestigious statuettes: best editing (which also sparked controversy), best sound mixing and best sound editing. It was the most awarded film of that year.. It was also nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture (won in 2019 by Green book). Bohemian Rhapsody brought Queen back to the forefront and introduced this legendary group to a whole new generation of viewers. When the biopic was released, sales of Queen’s music exploded.
