Alien: Romulus it is obviously one of the horror films not to be missed this summer, and one of the most anticipated films in short. First of all because it is the new work of the famous horror saga and should return to the origins of the franchise. Far from Alien: Covenant (2017) by Ridley Scott, which adopted a totally different style compared to the first four films Alien, both in substance and in form. For Alien: Romulusthat’s it Fede Alvarez who 20th Century Studios decided to trust, apparently giving him true freedom to make his film.

The director therefore decided to place the next feature film between the events of the first two, and then return to it drawings of creatures (the xenomorph and the facehugger) close to those imagined by HR Giger and was able to collaborate with the artistic teams ofAlien, the eighth passenger (1979). This is what she explained during his arrival in Paris during a presentation of several exclusive excerpts fromAlien: Romulus, reserved for the press. We were thus able to discover about ten minutes of the film which brings together four main scenes. A montage that aimed mainly at introducing the characters and presenting the atmosphere of the feature film shocking sequences.

What we know about the story

From what we saw during this event, and from what Fede Álvarez explained, we can understand that the protagonists will be a group of young space travelers who have known each other since childhood. Unlike previous films, these are not co-workers or crew members, but long-time friends. A non-trivial choice for the director:

It’s simply because you suffer more when you see people you care about die. But it’s not so much the audience that has to care about them, but rather seeing someone on screen caring about another person. This makes him sad. And finally it allows us to create a situation in which not everyone thinks for themselves, but asks the question: how can I escape without leaving my friends behind?

For a still unknown reason, they will go into space in the direction ofa space station adrift. For some it will be the first trip, for others the last… We will remember this first sequence above all visual quality (planes of space, of a ship or even of a quite apocalyptic planet). A result obtained from the combination of techniques, between practical effects and digital effects.

We built miniatures of the ships. And the CGI elements are not built by computers, but first by hand by a team of artists. Then we scanned these elements to make them in CGI. But we really feel the artisanal side.

Terrifying moments and faithfulness to the DNA ofAlien

The next sequences we saw focused on tension. First with the awakening of a dozen facehuggers (anticipated in the trailer). Since the latter are in a sort of laboratory, their origin should be different from the former Alien – in which we saw them emerge from a cocoon. In Alien: RomulusFede Álvarez wanted to focus more on these creatures, at least for the duration of a long and intense scene.

For me the facehugger has always been the most terrifying element. If I had to choose between being killed quickly by the xenomorph or the facehugger with all that entails, knowing how to die and the inevitable aspect, I would take the xenomorph without hesitation. And it’s true that I didn’t find it so exploited in the previous films, although for me it’s really the most terrifying thing.

After this scene, we could see the direct consequences of the facehugger, with judicious use of X-rays to render the outbreak of the xenomorph all the more scary. We notice from this passage the director’s desire to do more and more iconic creature, persisting for a long time as he extricates himself from a body. We also feel Fede Álvarez’s appetite at this level the blood (we are indebted to him evil Dead) in this bloody moment. Finally the last sequence presented was shown the imposing arrival of the xenomorph to adult dimensions, emerging from a sort of cocoon that the director likes to compare to an immense vagina.

Therefore, the director seems to have found the right balance between a revival of the classic elements of the filmAlienwith respect for drawings original and new elements imagined by Fede Álvarez. Which corresponds to the DNA of the saga, since the directors after Ridley Scott have all brought a form of renewal while maintaining the spirit ofAlien. We can judge the result in its entirety by August 14th in French cinemas.
