All things being equal: Demi Moore is GI Jane
Three years before unveiling his classic GladiatorDirector Ridley Scott signs the action film At the same conditions (GI Jane), released in March 1998 in French theaters (and in 1997 in the United States). If you haven’t seen it, the film is available for free on the France.TV website until October.
At the same conditions (original title GI Jane) begins with a hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee for the position of Secretary of the Navy. Senator Lillian DeHaven of Texas criticizes the Navy for its lack of gender neutrality. An agreement is secretly made : If women measure up to men in a series of tests, the military will fully integrate women into all Navy functions.
The first test is the US Navy’s Combined Reconnaissance Team training program, similar to that of the SEALs. Senator DeHaven chooses Lieutenant Jordan O’Neil, a topographical analyst, because she is more physically feminine than the other candidates.
To succeed, O’Neil must survive a rigorous selection program in which nearly sixty percent of applicants drop out before the fourth week, with the third week being particularly intense. nicknamed “hell week”. The enigmatic Chief Petty Officer John James Urgayle leads the training program, which includes 20-hour days of tasks designed to exhaust recruits physically and mentally.
These tasks include moving giant fenders over dunes, obstacle courses, and carrying landing rafts. Even though O’Neil is a higher rank than Urgayle, he runs the training and she has to fight for her place like everyone else.
A scene that left its mark
The film was not a memorable success at the box office, grossing only $97 million on an estimated budget of $50 million. Critics were not kind to Ridley Scott’s film, and The reception from the public was rather lukewarm. (as evidenced by its 6/10 score on IMDB). Equal Arms was even nominated for a Razzie Award (a ceremony that awards the worst films of the year) and Demi Moore was named “worst actress of the year”. However, her performance stood out for a single scene.
Halfway through the film, O’Neil decides to go to the hairdresser. Since the living room is empty, she took an electric hair clipper and shaved her head. For the purposes of filming this scene of At the same conditionsDemi Moore actually shaved her head. A brave gesture, which demonstrated her total involvement in this very physical role. Natalie Portman did the same for the film V for Vendetta released in 2005.
