Tonight on TV: this hilarious comedy is the remake of a huge success of Italian cinema

Jérôme Commandeur’s second feature film

In 2022, for his second feature film as director, Jérôme Commandeur directs Irreducible. A very funny and energetic comedy in which the comedian and actor plays Vincent, a man captured by an Amazonian indigenous tribe. To save his skin, he will then have to tell the story of his life.

Vincent is originally a local civil servant, determined to do as little as possible in his job. When a major reform is announced, he refuses to resign and is then transferred by his administration to unlikely positions, as his boss thinks that sooner or later he will collapse. One day, Vincent meets Eva, a researcher with whom he falls in love…

Switching in the same film from a school comedy with its many cameos to a romantic comedy, Jérôme Commandeur makes us laugh with his character, full of good nature and naivety. Around him, Laëtitia Dosch (Eva) and Pascale Arbillot, who plays Vincent’s boss, portray female characters who, each in their own way, direct the latter’s life and actions.

At Cinema, Irreducible attracts more 760,000 spectators in the rooms. It’s better than Jérôme Commandeur’s first film My family already adores youwhich sold 555,160 tickets in 2016. But considering the comic genius of Jérôme Commandeur and his popularity, Irreducible it could have undoubtedly done better, if its second part had not been less appreciated by the public and the press, considered too long and too conventional. Above all, the film does much worse than the Italian film of which it is a remake: Where am I going?

The remake of the biggest Italian success in history

Irreducible it is a remake, with some differences to stay in the 20s and the French context, of the Italian comedy What am I going to?. With the same principle of Irreduciblewe follow the story of a man, a small-time official attached to his privileges who tells an indigenous tribe, to save his skin, how he got there.

With 9.3 million viewersIt is currently the most profitable Italian film in history, with a national box office takings of 65.3 million euros. A historic performance that then inspired Jérôme Commandeur Irreduciblewithout however achieving the same success.

This is their third film together, after What a beautiful day in 2011 and Sun in buckets in 2013.
