Amazing debut, in Italy and with René Clément

Born on November 8, 1935 in Sceaux, Alain Delon was an emblematic figure of French cinema, whose career began since 1957 under the direction of Yves Allégret When the woman gets involved. Over the next two decades, the actor played a succession of roles, appearing in an average of three films a year, both in France and Italy. SO, Rene Clemente captures all her beauty and mischief in the excellent Full sun (1960)before directing him a second time in the Italian romantic comedy What a joy to live (1961). In the meantime, he appeared in one of his many important roles with Rocco and his brothers (1960) by Luchino Visconti.

Italy is doing well with Alain Delon in this period. Visconti finds him again for the great historical drama The Cheetah (1963)awarded the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Just as Michelangelo Antonioni places him alongside another legendary actress, Monica Vitti The eclipse (1962). And even if America asked for it (The San Francisco Murderers), remains faithful to France and to the director who made him famous. René Clément thus gives him another leading role in the thriller The felines (1964), alongside Jane Fonda, before involving him in an ambitious liberation project during the Second World War, Is Paris burning? (1966)worn by a multitude of actors and actresses.

A figure of the thriller with Melville

Subsequently Alain Delon had a decisive meeting in his career in the person of Jean Pierre Melvillewhich offers him his first role as Samurai (1967). The director will then make the actor a thriller figure, with, subsequently, The Red Circle (1970) and A policeman (1972). Sometimes a policeman, sometimes a bandit, Alain Delon excels at both, and knows how to play with his natural beauty here and there, as with The swimming pool (1968)a burning and disturbing film with Romy Schneider, which will serve as an advertising campaign for a perfume in 2010.

Even though in the 70’s he lost none of his splendor and continued to vary his way of playing and his genres (let’s remember Mr. Klein in 1976), Alain Delon finally slowed down in the 80s. The actor acted in “only” ten films, but was finally recognized at the César by winning the Best Actor Award for Our story (1985). It didn’t work anymore in the 90s, before becoming even rarer thereafter. It still accepts playing the symbolic role of Julius Caesar in comedy Asterix at the Olympic Games (2008), before almost completely moving away from the sets. In 2019, the Cannes Film Festival paid tribute to him by awarding him a Palm of Honor.
