Gladiator 2: Denzel Washington Drops a Little Phrase That Will Worry His Fans

Denzel Washington close to retirement?

Time passes, that’s what it does, and no one can stop it. Cinema, for its part, can do everything to try to stop the march of time, fixing moments of eternity on the screen, its iconic actors and actresses grow old and know that they too, yes, they, are just ride. This is essentially what Denzel Washington suggested, interviewed by Empire magazine about his decision to join the cast of the highly anticipated Gladiator 2directed by Ridley Scott.

This is his second collaboration with the British director. American Gangster In 2007 he played a fictional version of Macrinus, a historical figure who was prefect of the Praetorium and head of civil affairs in Rome, and who later became emperor from 217 to 218 AD JC. According to historical accounts, he was involved in the assassination of Caracalla, embodied in Gladiator 2 by Fred Hechinger, and whom he succeeded as head of the Roman Empire in 217 AD JC.

In Gladiator 2“his” Macrinus is different because he is a rich arms merchant, but who intends to become emperor at all costs…

A character revealed in the trailer for Gladiator 2and that seems to fit Denzel Washington like a glove. But could this role be one of his last, before a well-deserved retirement? This is in fact what the actor has suggested He got the game AND The Man on Fire:

I have very few films left to make, films that interest me. I have to be inspired by the director, and I have been enormously inspired by Ridley. We had a great experience the first time (“American Gangster”, ed.), and here we are again.

The actor adores the Scott brothers

The one who was named the greatest actor of the 21st century (so far) by the New York Times in 2020 should therefore considerably to move his vast audienceas at 69 he expects to be in the last part of his acting career. We will see him in 2025 High and low by Spike Lee, and according to IMDb he is currently working on another project, without providing any details.

Perhaps more attracted now to directing, the “actor” of Denzel Washington could therefore become increasingly rare and very demanding in choosing his future projects. In any case, he will have already left a very significant mark on the history of cinema. And in part with Tony Scott, Ridley’s brother with whom he shot five feature films, including cult ones USS Alabama AND The Man on Fire. About the two brothers, Denzel Washington said:

I’m not comparing the directors. We see their different personalities. I guess they have similarities. When I shoot, I focus on what I have to do. So I won’t compare this film with another, but they are obviously two great directors.
