Kill Bok, quick : hitwoman and single mother

It’s been almost a year and a half since Netflix put it online Kill Bok-soon (March 31, 2023). The Korean film was first selected out of competition in the “Berlinale Special” section of the 2023 Berlinale, before landing on the streaming service. On paper, Byun Sung-hyun’s proposal (Without mercy, Kingmaker) was interesting. The film follows Gil Bok-soon (Jeon Do-yeon), a famous hitwoman, who works for the largest assassination agency. But in addition to being the best in her field, Gil Bok-soon is also a single mother raising her daughter Jae-young (Kim Si-a). In this role, the assassin excels much less, since her teenager rejects her and does not dare to confess her homosexuality. Deciding to retire to better take care of her daughter, Bok-soon will obviously end up in trouble.

Despite an atmosphere Goodbye forever (1996), Kill Bok-soon did not convince us (see our review). On the other hand, the feature film attracted people to Netflix. During seven weeksThe film was included in the top 10 of the overall non-English speaking productions. It was also positioned in the Top 10 Movies of the Moment in 84 Countries. Although the platform did not disclose figures, the score convinced the production to expand the universe of Kill Bok-soon with a spin-off.

Mantis Spin-Off in the Works

Expiration has forwarded this information from Netflix, indicating that this film is currently titled Mantis (working title). New characters will be at the center of the story, played by Yim Si-wan (Unlocked), Park Gyu-young (Sweet home) and Jo Woo-jin (Alienoid). The first one will play Han-wool, an assassin nicknamed Mantis and employed by MK (the same company as in Kill Bok, quick). His name was mentioned in the previous film. We learned that this man was on vacation at the time. It is precisely upon his return from leave that he will meet the other protagonists. A new apprentice named Jae-yi (Park Gyu-young) and former friend of Mantis. Jo Woo-jin will play Dok-go, a legendary retired assassin and the new president of MK.

Byun Sung-hyun will not return to direct. That role has been given to Lee Tae-sung, assistant director and co-writer of Kill Bok-soon. No release date has been specified for Mantis.
