If a movie has left its mark on the year 2022, that’s good Top Gun: nonconformist. The return of the greatest fighter pilot in cinematic history was indeed a resounding successunexpected and ultra-satisfying. It got rave reviews and performed monstrously at the global box office with almost$1.5 billion in revenue.
If it reaches stratospheric heights, it is because the film directed by Joseph Kosinski and brought forward by actor and producer Tom Cruise succeeds in everything it offers, from the spectacular aerial action sequences to these intimate and emotional moments. And it was precisely in one of these moments that Tom Cruise opened up. Namely the reunion with “Iceman” (Val Kilmer), the central scene of Top Gun: nonconformistAND heartbreaking moment in cinema.

In this sequence, “Maverick” visits “Iceman”, on the “order” of the latter now admiral, to discuss the difficulties of his mission and his relationship with Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw. 36 years later Top Gun by Tony Scott, Tom Cruise/”Maverick” then finds his former rival and friend. And if the scene is so touching it’s because it unfolds fully its “meta” size integrating Val Kilmer’s much weakened health into the story.
In fact, their dialogue can be heard on two levels. That of the story of their characters, and that of the story of the two actors. On the set of Jimmy KimmelTom Cruise thus revealed that he was particularly moved during the filming of this sequence.
I just want to say it was very emotional. I’ve known Val for decades. For him to come back and reprise that character… He’s such a strong actor that he immediately became his character again. He is the Iceman.
I cried. I was very moved. He’s a really brilliant actor and I love his work.
Tom Cruise can rest assured, he is not the only one to have been deeply touched by this sequence, which celebrates the history of Top Gunits two iconic characters and these two great Hollywood actors.
