Music films have been around for decades and the genre is experiencing a renaissance. 2021 was full of these projects, with beloved theatrical productions adapted for cinema. And the first trailer of 13: The musical adds Debra Messing and Rhea Perlman to the Broadway musical.
13 opened on Broadway in 2008 and had a limited but impactful run on the Great White Way. In fact, it’s what made Ariana Grande a star and helped her get her performance booked on Nickelodeon. Now comes a theatrical version, with the trailer above revealing the first images of the adaptation coming to Netflix. The trailer above opens with our protagonist Evan, played by Eli Golden. He is a New York boy determined to have the best Bar Mitzvah possible when his parents suddenly split up and moves to Indiana with his mother (Debra Messing). Evan must make new friends and throw his party while he sings the killer tunes of Jason Robert Brown (the last 5 years, songs for a new world).
While the young talent cast is mostly made up of newcomers, there are some familiar faces that help flesh out the cast. In addition to Debra Messing, we also see the ever-iconic Rhea Perlman as her grandmother Ruth. Additionally, Nick’s icon Josh Peck plays Evan’s rabbi. These are all new roles debuting for the first time in 13: The musicalThe film adaptation of. There are no adults on stage and the cast and band are made up entirely of young talent.
This change for 13: The musical it’s obviously big, and it looks like the script by Tony Winning playwright Robert Horn will deviate a little from the play’s script. But it’s a fairly common practice for the genre, with Dear Evan Hansen poop songs and the in the heights movie by changing the order of the songs and completely removing a character. Netflix’s next music film is directed by Tamra Davis, who previously worked on projects such as The politician Yes High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.
At the time of writing, Ariana Grande has yet to react to the first trailer for 13: The musical. Grande played the role of Charlotte in the original Broadway cast, also covering the female lead Patrice. Since then, Grande has remained in contact with Jason Robert Brown, also appearing in concerts with the famous singer-songwriter and releasing covers of his songs.
