Tonight on TV: this cult thriller starring Morgan Freeman prevented the sequel to Seven

Morgan Freeman plays Alex Cross again

In 1996 one of the most famous thrillers was released in France, Seven by David Fincher. A cult film that subsequently inspired other works, as well as the two feature films carried out Morgan Freemann. First with The Collector (1997), where the actor plays detective Alex Cross, a character imagined by novelist James Patterson. A first film that was not a great success upon its release, but which led to a sequel four years later: The spider mask (2001). This left more of an impression. This well-executed thriller, rather marked by its time, has benefited from numerous television rebroadcasts since then.

Even though it came out later, The spider mask one is actually the prequel to Collector. Directed by Lee Tamahori, the feature film sees Senator’s daughter kidnapped. Everything suggests that her kidnapper is Gary Soneji, one of the girl’s teachers. Strangely enough, his first request is thatAlessio Croce be responsible for the investigation. The detective then realizes that this kidnapper is much more cunning and deceitful than he seems. To support him in his investigations, Cross will be able to count on agent Jezzie Flannigan (Monica Potter)responsible for the protection of minors.

When the continuation of Seven was considered

As mentioned above, the atmosphere of Seven it makes itself felt in these late ’90s and early 2000s thrillers like The Spider-Man. With obviously much less quality in production. But the similarities between these works and David Fincher’s film are not trivial and are one of the reasons why Seven it never had a sequel. A script was being considered to bring back Morgan Freeman as Detective Somerset. But David Fincher has embarked on other projects (starting with The gameThen Fight club), while Morgan Freeman agreed to play Alex Cross a second time The spider mask.

After this film, the actor decided to do it Don’t play this type of police officer again who must conduct an investigation into a sordid affair. In reality he remained there for several years. But that definitely closed the door on the sequel Seven. Part of the script, already written, was subsequently reused for another film, Premonitions (2015), which features a medium called by the FBI to arrest an Atlanta serial killer.
