Zodiac: a relentless thriller by David Fincher
Published in 2007, Zodiac by David Fincher is often considered one of the most gripping thrillers of the 2000s. Inspired by the unsolved murders committed by the mysterious Zodiac Killer in California in the 1960s and 1970s, the film stands out for its approach. rigorous and meticulous investigation. Despite its positive critical reception, Zodiac it was not an immediate commercial success, barely reaching $84 million in worldwide revenue on a $65 million budget. An investigation that continues to fascinate
If Zodiac still fascinates today, also because we continue to talk about the investigation into the identity of the murderer. In fact, although the case has never been officially solved, new elements regularly emerge which rekindle the interest of the public and the media.
In 2021, a group of amateur sleuths, called the House Breakersclaimed to have discovered the identity of the Zodiac Killer. According to their investigations, it would be a man named Gary Francis Poste, a Korean War veteran died in 2018. Their theory is based on cryptic elements found in letters sent by Zodiac, photographic evidence and testimonies collected from those around Poste. However, the authorities, especially the FBI, have not validated this theory and the identity of the killer remains officially unknown.
Furthermore, in 2020, another major breakthrough occurred in the case: one of the Zodiac’s code letters, known as “Z340”, was deciphered for the first time in over 50 years. This cryptogram, sent to Chronicle of San Francisco in 1969, it was deciphered by amateurs and cryptographers.
While this discovery did not reveal the killer’s identity, it helped revive interest in the decades-long investigation.
