The Office: The key scene where Steve Carell ‘changed the entire series’

After a first season that was not very well received by the public, The Office took a positive turn after the episode ‘Office Olympics’ aired.

Responsible for directing several episodes of The Office, Paul Feig explained how a key scene with Steve Carellinterpreter of michael scott in the successful production, he was responsible for “changing everything in the series,” especially in the perception of the character.

During participation in the podcast Dinner’s On Mepresented by Jesse Tyler Fergusonthe director recalled how the first season struggled with ratings because Michael Scott was “very annoying and mean.”

“Then, suddenly, Steve became a big star, and they had a big star on the show that they felt wasn’t working and wasn’t working in the ratings,” he said. Feig in conversation with Ferguson.

So, a moment of “Office Olympics,” third episode of the second season, changed the course of the development of Scott forever: “It was the scene we were shooting when everyone was supposed to be working and they were having fun doing this thing. And to not get in trouble with Michaelthey’re going to give him a gold medal.”

“But we were filming and Steve gets emotional. Steve like the character, because he had a terrible day,” he continued Paul Feig. “And then he starts crying, like a tear comes out of his eye and we’re like, ‘Oh, my God.’ And I’m like, ‘Oh, do that again. Do that again.’ And I think that was the moment of like, this is him.”

He has a humanity about him and everyone discovered, ‘No, he’s not an asshole. He’s a misguided idiot who’s an asshole because he’s trying to be funny.’ Right. So you think, ‘OK, he means well.’
