Hunger Games: the saga continues!
The saga Hunger Gameswritten by Suzanne Collins, began in 2008 with the publication of the first novel, followed by two more volumes in 2009 and 2010. The story is set in the dystopian world of Panem, a fictional nation built on the ruins of North Americacomposed of twelve neighborhoods under the dominion of the Capitol.
Every year the Capitol organizes the “Hunger Games”, a cruel spectacle in which a boy and a girl from each district must compete until death. Katniss Everdeen, heroine of District 12, volunteers in her sister’s place during the 74th edition of the games. Together with Peeta Mellark, another tributary of his district, he becomes the symbol of the rebellion against the oppression of the Capitol.
The worldwide success of these novels gave rise to a film adaptation, which began in 2012, with Jennifer Lawrence in the lead role. In 2023, a prequel titled The Rime of the Serpent and the Songbird came to enrich this universe, based again on a novel by Suzanne Collins. The franchise picked up more than three billion dollars at the box officemanufacturing Hunger Games an important reference of the dystopian genre in cinema.
Last June, fans learned that Suzanne Collins was preparing a new novel, Harvest dawn(which could translate as “Dawn of the Harvest”), scheduled for March 2025.
Haymitch at the center of The Hunger Games 6
This new novel will be set forty years after the events of The Rime of the Serpent and the Songbird and I will concentrate on the occasion of the 50th Hunger Gamesmarked by an exceptional rule: instead of two tributes per district, four children will be sent into the arena, two boys and two girls.
Haymitch Abernathy (played by Woody Harrelson in the first films), the first victor of District 12 before Katniss, will be the central character. Lionsgate quickly acquired the rights to a film adaptation, with a release scheduled for November 2026.
The novel’s cover was revealed today, as was the official synopsis:
The story of this new novel takes place during the fiftieth edition of the Hunger Games, a special version known as Quarter Quell. That year the Capitol imposed an even crueler rule: each neighborhood had to send four tributes instead of two, thus doubling the number of participants. Haymitch Abernathy, a young resident of District 12, is one of the chosen tributes. As he tries not to think about his chances of survival, he is torn from his family and the love of his life, and finds himself alongside three other tributes from his district: a dear friend, a young man obsessed with statistics, and a girl with a arrogant attitude.
In the arena, Haymitch quickly realizes that he has been trapped by a system that programmed him to fail. But despite the horror of the situation, decides to fight against injustice which weighs on him. His determination to survive and rebel against the Capitol resonates beyond the arena, laying the foundation for a future marked by resistance.
With this new adaptation, fans of the universe Hunger Games will have the opportunity to discover a new aspect of Panem’s history, through the eyes of one of the most enigmatic characters in the series. The discovery of his past tribute promises to be exciting for fans! We don’t yet know the name of the actor who will lend his features to the character.
