See you up there adapts the novel of the same name by Pierre Lemaitre, published in 2013 and winner of the Prix Goncourt. The plot takes place in end of the First World Warin November 1918. As the conflict draws to a close, Lieutenant Pradelle, played by Laurent Lafitte, sends his men on a dangerous mission, which results in the death of many soldiers. Among the survivors, Édouard Péricourt (Nahuel Pérez Biscayart), an artist disfigured by an explosion, and Albert Maillard (Albert Dupontel), an accountant, develop a strong friendship and organize a scam in memory of the fallen.
A tribute to those forgotten by the war
Albert Dupontel invested a lot of care in reconstructing the era. The sets and costumes faithfully reflect post-war France and provide a realistic and engaging setting for this historical fresco. The César-winning cinematography helps create the film’s unique atmosphere, highlighting the contrasts between the artistic beauty of the masks created by Édouard and the harshness of the reality of the time. The scenes take place in a Paris between the two wars, both poetic and brutal, where hope is confronted with the deep wounds left by the conflict.
See you up there highlights the difficulties soldiers encounter in reintegrating into society, often forgotten by a country focused on reconstruction. Through the character of Édouard, Dupontel pays homage to the “broken faces”, these fighters disfigured by war, struggling to find a place in civilian life. The relationship between Édouard and Albert forms the emotional heart of the story and shows their struggle for recognition and survival in a world that prefers to forget them.
