Billy Corgan empowers his community. The Smashing Pumpkins frontman and partner Chloe Mendel announced Thursday that they will be hosting a live-streamed benefit concert on July 4th in Highland Park, Illinois.
“About a week ago, we had a terrible tragedy here on the 4th of July that took so many lives and hurt so many people and really affected us as a community,” said Rocker, who has lived in Highland Park for about 20 years. In an Instagram video. “So what we want to do on the night of July 27 is a special benefit show. Jimmy Chamberlin will be part of the show, along with other members of the Pumpkins family.
“There are so many people here affected by this tragedy,” concluded Corgan. “This is very close to our hearts and we hope that you will also participate and support.”
The show, titled “Together and Again”, will take place at the couple’s herbal tea house, Madame Zuzu’s, in Highland Park. It will be streamed live at 8pm CT on the Smashing Pumpkins YouTube channel for free, where viewers will be able to donate. In addition to performances by Corgan and Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, jazz saxophonist Frank Catalano is scheduled to appear. Additional special guests will be announced, Corgan said.
All proceeds from the show will benefit the Highland Park Community Foundation and will also go to the organization’s Highland Park 4th of July Shooting Response Fund.
Corgan and Mendel live in Highland Park, where they raise their two young children and run Madame Zuzu’s. The teahouse is located on the main strip of Highland Park, where a 21-year-old man shot and killed seven people during the Independence Day parade, injuring dozens.
