Royal Casino : The Daniel Craig era
Released on French screens in November 2006, Royal Casino directed by Martin Campbell is the twenty-first film in the James Bond saga. It is the first to put Daniel Craig in the role of agent 007, who succeeds Pierce Brosnan, considered too old by the production. In the timeline, Royal Casino, adapted from the novel of the same name by Ian Fleming, East The first adventure of James Bond.
For his first mission, the English agent, now in possession of a license to kill, faces the all-powerful private banker of international terrorism, Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen). To complete his downfall and dismantle the largest crime network in existence, Bond must beat him in a high-stakes poker game at Casino Royale.
The beautiful Vesper Lynd (Eva Green), a Treasury official, accompanies him to make sure that Agent 007 takes care of the British government money he uses as a bet, but nothing will go as planned. As Bond and Vesper struggle to escape the assassination attempts of Le Chiffre and his men, other feelings arise between them that will only make them more vulnerable.
Why did Eva Green almost say no?
If the film was released (already) fourteen years ago, for many viewers Eva Green still remains very similar to her role as Vesper (even if she has made her way since then). And for good reason. This James Bond Girl with devastating charm is the agent’s first great love his ghost continues to haunt him during his adventures, until his last film, Death can wait.
However, the French actress almost missed out on the role that made her explode onto the international scene.
In 2006, Eva Green is still relatively little known to the general public, but she has acted success by Ridley Scott, Kingdom of Heaven a year earlier, which allowed her to acquire the status of an international actress, and opened the doors to the James Bond saga. One might then think that the French actress jumped at the opportunity when the production offered her to audition for the role of Vesper, but not at all.
In fact, Eva Green initially refused the offer, mistakenly thinking that it was the role of a puppet. He explained an interview :
I thought, “What’s it like to be a Bond Girl? Am I going to have to walk around in a bikini and nothing more?” and I told myself there was no point in even going to the audition. And then they insisted, they sent me the script and I completely changed my mind. I realized it was a love story.
If the role of Vesper Lynd allowed Eva Green to acquire international fame, she then moved towards productions much more independentS (Dark world, Cracks, Womb), before landing, in 2014, the second most important role of her career: that of Vanessa Ives in the series Terrible Penny.
Since then, he has navigated between major Hollywood productions (most notably with Tim Burton) and independent cinema (he received a César nomination for his role in Next).
She recently appeared on Dytique The Three Musketeersin which she played the poisonous Milady de Winter.
