Performers of Maximus and Commodus, respectively, Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix acted together in Gladiator (2000), directed by Ridley Scott
Despite Gladiator (2000) being one of the first great films and works of his career Joaquin Phoenixin which he lived Convenientthe artist almost quit the production in the middle of filming – and was even called “terribly amateur” by Russell Croweinterpreter of Maximus Decimus Meridius.
During an interview with The New York Times to promote the sequel, titled Gladiator 2which premieres on November 14, 2024 in Brazilian cinemas, the director Ridley Scott was asked about the reputation of Phoenix abandoning projects.
In the conversation, the filmmaker recognized how the actor has had this characteristic for a long time, and this even affected the filming of the classic, and Crowe he even had to speak out about his former co-star’s behavior.
“He was dressed as a prince saying, ‘I can’t do this.’ I said, ‘What?’ AND Russell said, ‘This is terribly amateurish,'” he recalled. Fortunately, Scott managed to convince the actor to stay and complete filming. At the end, Joaquin Phoenix was nominated to Oscar 2001 of Best Supporting Actor (lost to Benicio Del Toro put traffic).
I can act as an older brother or father. But I’m very good friends with Joaquin. Gladiator was a baptism of fire for both of us at first.
