The series adaptation of Cat’s eyes : a long-term project
We met the series team at the La Rochelle Fiction Festival Cat’s eyes. Inspired by Tsukasa Hojo’s manga, the series begins on TF1 on November 11th. Under the sign of good humor, the actresses Camille Lou (Tamara), Constance Labbé (Sylia) and Claire Romain (Alexia) they told us how they approached their roles. Producers Benjamin Dupont-Jubien and Mehdi Sabbar, screenwriter Michel Catz and director Alexandre Laurent told us about the long process and their special relationship with the author.
We remember that Tsukasa Hojo’s manga have sold 30 million copies worldwide. The adventures of the Chamade sisters have been adapted in the cartoonwith credits that French fans still remember. A title that Camille Lou, Constance Labbé and Claire Romain did not know, not being of their generation. For Constance Labbé it was quite a bit Nicky Larson who watched with his brothers, while Camille Lou adored Totally spies: “ It would almost be better not to have known these heroines during our childhood, because we would have been paralyzed interpreting them! “.
Rock and hyper modern heroines
Screenwriter Michel Catz and producers Benjamin Dupont-Jubien and Mehdi Sabbar, all three fans of the manga, are guided by their artistic vision. They made sure to “ rediscover the emotional accuracy felt while reading the original work “. They tried to maintain the characteristics of the manga, changing the characters a bit. In the series, Tam is much less wise and more conflicted with Sylia, while Alexia is more mischievous.
Tsukasa was touched by the respect and love we have for his work and by the chosen angle of the question posed at the origin of the story. Or how girls who have lost their father become thieves and real super strong hotheads.
In the synopsis of Cat’s eyesSylia, Tamara and Alexia find themselves in the City of Light, after years of separation. A work that belonged to his father (Grégory Fitoussi), who disappeared twelve years earlier in the mysterious fire of his art gallery, resurfaces during a prestigious exhibition at the Eiffel Tower. They therefore decide to take all the risks to take her away in the hope of finally understanding what happened to her.
The Japanese author validated several phases from reading the first pages of the script seven years earlier. For him it was a promise that gave him great pleasure “.
He liked the principle of adapting to Paris, the mixture of action and romance. Or the invention of characters or situations, like Sylia’s love story.
Tsukasa also came to Paris and met the team. The director told him “ showed the moodboards, the sets, the costumes – of which the color codes of the manga were respected – and hairstyles » Brown hairstyles for the three sisters in the manga that the authors preferred to separate in the series.
Tsukasa told us: “feel free, have fun”! We felt free from habits and his confidence in our vision gave us wings!
On set, the author saw the perfect chemistry between the three sisters at work. Because it was truly the greatest challenge to be able to create the feeling of sisterhood among the 200 actresses auditioned. Constance Labbé has “ DSthey felt as soon as they encountered the good energy between the three of them “. Camille Lou recognizes that “ they were really lucky because their complicity is real “. But it was clearly the physical preparation that united them both” fun and exciting “, inserting them all” areas of discomfort and stress.
Three actresses united by emotion
Everyone trained in climbing and Camille Lou also followed the sports training for racing. They were ” reassured by professionals and accompanied in the choreographies of fights and acrobatics “. Stunts that not everyone performs, including the one on the Eiffel Tower, in which Camille is voiced by the gymnast Chloé, tester of the Ninja Warrior courses. Alexandre Laurent, who doesn’t like to cheat at all with green backgrounds, I absolutely wanted to shoot in natural environments. In a credible universe of ” Paris magnified and fantasized like Amélie Poulin », the director thus began filming on the Eiffel Tower, which we see in the first 2 episodes.
We didn’t have time to be afraid because the pace of filming was intense: we couldn’t improvise! This Iron Lady had to be tamed.
Camille confirms that “ 30 meters highthey are laughter and tears that arise immediately, something that the studio or a gym where we are 4 meters apart do not allowfrom the ground “. He also found that “ the Eiffel Tower moves and the stairs do not hide at all the emptiness that we constantly see, making everyone dizzy “. A vertigo” sometimes complicated to manage » for Claire Roman, who admits to having hidden it during the casting.
Three other emblematic places are also highlighted Cat’s eyes. Thus the Louvre, the Castle of Versailles or even the Paris Mint. Camille Lou still retains the memory of this place” having to turn around and fall head first in -6 degree temperatures at 5am. “. We can indeed see on the screen to what extent the three accomplice actresses offered their person. The entire team also acknowledges that the filming was “ humanly very strong “.
The producers and director conceded particular attention to musicguaranteeing a “ contemporary musical universe with hints of the pop side of the 80s “. The music of each episode thus takes into account the situations and emotions of the sisters, deliberately taking the opposite view of the image and recalling the famous French closing credits.
Finally, the producers of Cat’s eyes I want a season 2but they know it will depend on the success of the first season. While the teams were forced to film in winter and finish in March, due to the summer Olympic Games, Camille Lou however poses one condition for the new season: avoid rain !”
