Gladiator: Russell Crowe hated this cult rerun

GladiatorRidley Scott’s immense epic

When we think about Ridley Scottthe first movie titles that come to mind are probably Alien, Blade Runner and, of course, Gladiator. While almost all of the director’s filmography is impressive, these films are among his most pop culture-based works. For Gladiatorthis led to five Oscars in 2001, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Russell Crowe.

Moreover, when we talk about the actor, it is difficult not to associate him, even today, with his iconic role of Maximus, this Roman general betrayed by Commodus, son of the emperor Marcus Aurelius, who did not hesitate to assassinate his father to take the his place. A terrible character perfectly embodied by Joaquin Phoenix, while Connie Nielsen, Oliver Reed and Djimon Hounsou play solid supporting roles.

All this, under the precise direction of Ridley Scott, gave life to a memorable film which, more than 20 years later, continues to fascinate, while the sequel has just arrived in cinemas.

My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius…

Considered a cult film, Gladiator is largely for his sharp answers. These are also very well highlighted in the French version, especially thanks to the dubbing of Marc Alfos (voice of Russell Crowe). It is also thanks to him that we tirelessly come out into the open this memorable monologue : “My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander in chief of the armies of the North, general of the Legions of the Phoenix, faithful servant of the true emperor Marcus Aurelius. Father of a murdered son, husband of a murdered wife and I will have my revenge in this life or the next“.

However this step could have been different. More precisely the last part: I will have my revenge in this life or the next. In fact, Russell Crowe didn’t like this piece, as explained The Guardian referring to Nicole LaPorte’s new book about the DreamWorks studio (which co-produced the film and distributed it in North America). The actor found this phrase ridiculous and favorite improvise something else while filming. He tried several variations, but none were convincing. Then he had to go back to the script and reluctantly say this famous line. But not without showing his disagreement by telling Ridley Scott after the filming:

It was shit. But I’m the greatest actor in the world and I can make shit look good.

The actor therefore doesn’t mince words. But despite his seemingly enormous ego, he at least tried his best to deliver his dialogue. Then we can ask ourselves if it is Russell Crowe who makes this phrase so powerful, or if it is simply the lyrics that fit perfectly…
