A family tragedy and failed institutions
The story that inspired Reports it is that of a little girl, Karine, victim of serious abuse within her own family. From an early age, Karine suffered physical, psychological and sexual violence from her parents, abuse which continued for years. Despite numerous reports to the competent authorities, he remained under the custody of his executioners.
Laurence Brunet-Jambu (played by Cécile Bois in the TV movie), her aunt, was one of the rare people to tirelessly alert people to the abuse her niece was the victim of. However, it encountered a wall of indifference on the part of the institutions: social services and justice, which should protect children in danger, have repeatedly ignored or downplayed their relationships. Between endless administrative procedures and lack of coordination between the different actors, Karine’s fate seemed sealed.
For more than ten years, Laurence has taken many steps to get Karine out of this hell. It has faced clear dysfunction in the treatment of abuse cases: misinterpreted reports, disputed expert opinions and a system sometimes more concerned with compliance with procedures than with the safety of the child. This long and tiring struggle finally allowed Karine to find refuge with her aunt. But this victory came at the cost of a journey full of pitfalls, illustrating the glaring gaps in child protection in France.
Laurence Brunet-Jambu has since fought to change things in France regarding child abuse.
A powerful adaptation by Eric Metayer
The television movie Reports it is faithful to the story told in the book by Laurence and Karine Brunet. Directed by Éric Métayer, this drama aims to accurately and soberly portray the stages of this fight against abuses and institutional defects. Cécile Bois plays Laurence Brunet-Jambu with considerable intensitymaking palpable the determination and courage of this woman who never gave up, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles.
Presented at the La Rochelle Fiction Festival in 2023, the film received a warm reception, in particular for the moving performance of Cécile Bois, awarded the award for best female performance. Beyond its artistic dimension, the television film sparked a debate on the state of the institutions responsible for protecting children in danger.
Reports highlights essential questions: Why do children sometimes remain in homes where they suffer abuse despite repeated reports? What mechanisms should be reviewed to ensure more effective protection? The film does not simply tell a story, but challenges, forces collective reflection and pushes for awareness.
