Author of the book that inspired the play and film starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo wrote a scene in which the characters kiss
Gregory Maguireauthor of the book Wicked (1995), which inspired the Broadway musical and now the films of the same name, revealed his ideas behind the work.
In an interview with the website Them published on Monday, 9, Maguire explained how he was inspired by the children’s book The Wonderful Wizard of Ozfirst published in 1900: “I wanted Oz to seem as real as Middle Earth.”
“I wanted it to have a depth of culture, a depth of history, and a complexity of experiences that were more analogous to the world we live in. And that meant it needed to include varieties of sexual experiences,” he continued.
Fans speculate that there is some sexual tension between Glinda and Elphaba. In the book of Maguirethe characters actually kiss, but in the film starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo the scene was left aside.
“That was intentional, and it was modest and restrained and refined in a way that you would imagine that one of these two young women felt something more than the other and didn’t want to say it,” he said. Maguire.
“Or maybe, because a novelist can’t write every scene, maybe when the lights were off and the novelist was smoking in an alley, the girls had sex in bed on the way to the Emerald City. I wanted to propose that possibility, but I didn’t want to make a definitive statement on that,” he added.
