Tickles tells the story of Odette, a cheerful eight-year-old girl who is passionate about dance. Her life is turned upside down when Gilbert, a family friend, begins to abuse her. As she grows up, Odette (played by Andréa Bescond herself) tries to rebuild herself, using dance as an outlet to express her emotions and face her past.
The film, adapted from Andréa Bescond’s autobiographical work entitled Tickling or the dance of angermixes childhood flashbacks and contemporary scenes. This narrative structure gives a touching depth to the story, showing how childhood trauma continues to haunt adult life.
Dance as an outlet
Tickles is based directly on Andréa Bescond’s personal experience. From the age of eight, the actress and director was the victim of repeated sexual abuse by a close relative of her family. The latter, presented as a caring friend, took advantage of his position of trust to abuse the young woman.
Like many children who find themselves in such situations, Andréa Bescond did not dare speak. Prisoner of silence, she carried this trauma with her for yearswhich had repercussions on her life as a teenager and as an adult. This heavy secret marked her family relationships and her perception of herself, until she found a way to express her anger and pain: dance.
Dance has become an outlet for Andréa Bescond, a way to transform her suffering into strength. A few years later, he decided to tell his story through an autobiographical work entitled Tickling or the dance of anger. This work has been praised for its boldness and sincerity, tackling a taboo subject with rare accuracy.
A film awarded with two Césars
The casting is also a strong point of the film. Karin Viard gives a compelling performance as the mother, torn between misunderstanding and guilt. Clovis Cornillac plays the father, a caring but often absent man. They both surround Andréa Bescond, who gives Odette a touching depth and vulnerability.
Upon its release in 2018, Tickles he received praise for his boldness and accuracy in dealing with such a sensitive topic.
