The natural disaster that inspired the film
The unpronounceable title of the film, Eyjafjallajökullis taken directly from a true event: the eruption of the Icelandic volcano in April 2010. Located in southern Iceland, Eyjafjallajökull is a volcano covered by a glacier, whose activity caused one of the largest aerial disturbances of recent history.
Between 14 and 20 April 2010 the volcano erupted, spewing millions of tons of volcanic ash into the atmosphere. This cloud of ash, carried by the winds, quickly spread over Europe, making flights impracticable. In a few days, more than 100,000 flights were cancelledaffecting millions of passengers around the world.
The Eyjafjallajökull eruption didn’t just disrupt air traffic: It also drew global attention to Iceland’s volcanoes, known for their potential to cause major disasters. Fortunately, this eruption caused no human casualties, but its economic and logistical impact was immense.
