A fiction anchored in reality
Alexandre Dumas, master of the historical novel, was often inspired by news events and real characters. For “The Count of Monte Cristo”, published between 1844 and 1846, he was particularly inspired by the story of François Picaud, a French shoemaker of the early 19th century.
According to Paris police archives, Picaud, originally from Nîmes, was engaged to a rich woman, arousing the jealousy of his friends. In 1807 the latter falsely accused him of espionage for England, which led to his arrest his imprisonment without trial. During his detention he met an Italian priest who, before dying, revealed to him the existence of a hidden treasure. Released after the fall of Napoleon in 1814, Picaud would recover this treasure and dedicate the following years to methodically taking revenge on those who had betrayed him.
This story has surprising similarities with that of Edmond Dantès, the protagonist of Dumas’ novel, brilliantly played by Pierre Niney in the film. Like Picaud, Dantès is the victim of a defamatory denunciation orchestrated by jealous relatives, which leads to his incarceration at the Château d’If. In prison he meets Father Faria, who reveals to him the location of a hidden treasure on the island of Monte Cristo. After his escape, Dantes uses this fortune to take revenge on his enemies and reward those who remained faithful to him.
Between reality and fiction
Although François Picaud’s story served as the basis for that of Edmond Dantès, Alexandre Dumas enriched and fictionalized the story to make it an epic work. In particular, he added characters, subplots, and philosophical reflections on justice, revenge, and forgiveness. The result is a complex and captivating novel which, while drawing on true events, transcends simple news to become a profound exploration of the human condition.
Thus, if “The Count of Monte Cristo” has its roots in a true story, it remains above all a work of fiction, a mirror of Dumas’ creative genius and his ability to transform reality into literary legend.
