Mickey 17: a joyful double dose by Robert Pattinson

Bong Joon-Ho returns to English

Main figure in Korean cinema since the early 2000s (mainly thanks to Memories of murder AND The host), Bong Joon-Ho has reached the international leaders Parasite (2019). His seventh film has won a quantity of prizes, including the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival e Four Oscars – The best film, the best director, the best original screenplay and the best international film. It is therefore not surprising to see the director try, for the third time, an experience in English, with Mickey Mouse 17.

In 2013 (Snowpicer), Bong Joon-I adapted French comics The pierceneige (1982), by Jacques Lob and Jean-Marc Rochette, with a mainly English language cast (Chris Evans, and Harris, Tilda Swinton …) for an interesting result although Iall. Rebel in 2017 with Okjascience fiction film with ecological objective, but treated too childish. With Mickey Mouse 17Bong Joon-Ho continues to create a real disparity in his filmography between His Korean works and English speakers.

Robert Pattinson, hero loser From Mickey Mouse 17

However, the director’s obsessions have not varied according to the language. We find in Mickey Mouse 17 The themes dear to Bong Joon-Ho: The relationship between the social classes (Snowpicer AND Parasite), the question of the physical monster (The host AND Okja) in opposition to Human monstrosity (Memories of murder) and duality between Ecology and politicsof the most relevant today.

Approached with a form of lightness of your feeling, Mickey Mouse 17 presents its universe through Mickey (Robert Pattinson), a final loser who, to escape from an outlet, agreed to become a expendable within an expedition to space. Expedition organized by Kenneth Marshall (Mark Ruffalo), a politician who evokes Trump and who, after losing the elections on Earth, wants to become the leader of a colony on a new planet. To ensure that the new place is habitable, Mickey will have to play guinea pigs. Because likeexpendableand thanks to a very sophisticated machine (a sort of 3D printer), Mickey can die and be “reprinted” at will. In each of his dead, his memory is replaced in a copy, allowing him to return to coal immediately.

Entertainment to the (also) clear message

It is so much for mastery of the genres of Bong Joon-Ho as for the performance of Robert Pattinson (in a double succulent role) The worst situations become terribly funny. The director also takes on the aspect of the entertainment of his work and does not worry about any subtlety to transmit his messages. Here we find a similarity with Okja Which, as we remember, had come out in the world (excluding South Korea) on Netflix. For Mickey Mouse 17It is the study of Warner Bros. who managed the operations. Difficult not to interpret some choices of Bong Joon-I as a fear of not being understood by the greater number. As if some steps had been smooth to be able to touch the American Neuneu.

Having more artistic expectations with Bong Joon-Ho, it is deplorable to see it fall Too often in ease and coarse caricature. Like the two political characters (Marshall and his wife played by Collette tones), vulgar as cruel and no less stupid. In the same way, after its convincing first part, the global scenario can no longer surprise and ends after a too expected resolution.

In the meantime, the setbacks of this poor Mickey and his opposition with A double psychopath have the gift of having fun. This main, pure and selfless character is eminently touching. And both in front of the excellent Naomi Ackie (Nasha) or The French anamaria VARTOLOMEI (Kai, very right but not present in the film), Robert Pattinson knows when to vanish and put himself at the service of the story. Finally, the most interesting part of Mickey Mouse 17i.e. a criticism of human expansion, violence in front of the unknown e excessive exploitation. A science fiction report that is close to our historical and unfortunately always relevant reality.
