Learn how humans turn into monsters and know all kinds of creatures that arise in the universe of The Last of Us
In The Last of Usenemies are not common zombies. They are victims of a real fungus that transforms humans into terrifying creatures. If you watched the series of HBO Or played the games, already knows that each type of infected is scarier than the other. But do you know them all? We have prepared a complete guide – and without spoilers – for you to understand how this infection works and what monsters that come from it. Check it out:
1. Runners (Runners)
-
Infection time: From 1 to 2 weeks
-
How are they: These are the most recent infected. They still keep much of the appearance and human movements, but act brutally and impulsively. They attack in groups and with a lot of speed.
-
In the series: They were the first to appear, and show how the infection acts fast on the body and mind.
-
Curiosity: There are theories that corridors still have brief moments of consciousness, which would make them victims stuck in their own bodies.

2.
-
Infection time: from 2 weeks to 1 year
-
How are they: represent the transition between corridors and crash. They already have deformations caused by the fungus, but still can see. They are known to hide and attack by surprise.
-
Behavior: More stealing, they often cling to the walls and act by the shadows, creating constant tension.
-
In the series: Still little explored, they should gain more prominence in the coming seasons.

3.
-
Infection time: more than 1 year
-
How are they: Completely blind, with the head taken by hardened fungus plates. They are guided by the sound, using scary cracks such as ecolocation.
-
Danger: They are extremely lethal. One wrong movement can be fatal for those around.
-
In the series and in the games: They are the most iconic type of infected, visual symbol of the franchise.
-
Curiosity: The sound of the cracks is so striking that it was made with a mixture of organic and digital effects to cause real discomfort.

4. Baiacu and stumbling
-
Infection time: several years
-
Baiacus (or “greenhoused”): They are huge, with bodies covered by thick fungus layers. Strong, resistant and capable of launching toxic spores at a distance.
-
Stroke (only in The Last of Us Part II): swollen and flammable, expel acid clouds that burn everything around.
-
In the series: Baiacu appears briefly, emerging from a hole in the floor in one of the most striking scenes of season 1.
-
Curiosity: Due to visual complexity, these infected require makeup hours and practical effects to make life on screens.

5. The Rat King (Rat King)
-
Infection time: decades
-
How it is: Bizarre fusion of several infected in a single colossal creature. A pulsating jumble of fungi, arms and heads.
-
Apparition: appears only in The Last of Us Part IIat Seattle’s abandoned hospital, and is considered one of the most difficult chiefs in the game.
-
Curiosity: It was inspired by the real idea of the “King Rat”, when several rats are trapped by the tails and become one organism – here, taken to the extreme.
