Entertainment of 10 things I hate in you comments on Broadway musical: ‘Don’t hurt my baby’

Gil Junger says he is excited about the adaptation signed by Lena Dunham and Carly Rae Jepsen, but expects the essence of the film to be preserved

More than 25 years after the launch of 10 things I hate on you (10 Things I Hate About Youin the original), the director Gil Junger commented the new adaptation of the film to a musical from Broadway. In an interview with the magazine PeopleHe said he was excited about the project – even though he was not part of the production – and revealed that he has received invitations to direct theatrical versions of history in the past.

Despite not being involved, the 70 -year -old director has shown confidence in the creative team. The new version will be directed by Christopher Wheeldonwith script cohesible by Lena Dunham (Girls) and Jessica Huangand songs signed by Carly Rae Jepsen in partnership with Ethan Gruska. The musical supervision will be Tom Kittwinner of two Tony awards.

“I’m very excited to see what Lena will do with it. She’s extremely talented. She has that voice,” Junger said. “It’s in good hands. I’m just excited to watch.”

Even so, the director recognizes the emotional attachment with the story that consecrated him in the cinema.

“There’s a part of me who thinks’ just don’t hurt my baby,” he confessed. “I don’t want you to hurt the essence or legend of the movie.”

Playing on Wheeldon’s responsibility, Junger added: “I put a light curse on it … joke. I wish you a lot of luck.”

Original movie became pop culture classic

Launched in 1999, 10 things I hate on you It was a teen romantic comedy starring Julia Stiles (Kat Stratford) and Heath Ledger (Patrick Verona), inspired by the play The tameby William Shakespeare. The film also revealed names like Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Larisa Oleynik and Gabrielle Unionand became a milestone for the 2000s generation.

In the plot, rebel Kat is challenged by Patrick, a new student who tries to conquer her in the midst of a plan armed by other colleagues. The production balanced acid humor, romance and a striking soundtrack, and is considered to this day one of the main titles of the genre.

New Trilogy for Cinemas

In addition to carefully following the theatrical adaptation, Gil Junger is developing a new project for theaters: a trilogy based on contemporary themes of the adult universe. The first feature will be called 10 Things I Hate About Dating and will be inspired by the play The Misantropy (1666), from Molière.

According to the director, the idea is to follow the logic of the original movie – which updated Shakespeare for the 1990s – now using a classic French work as the basis for exploring dilemmas of relationships in the 30 -year -old. The next titles are already defined: 10 Things I Hate About Marriage and 10 Things I Hate About Kids.

Junger said he would love to see known faces in the new movie, and confirmed that there will be a tribute to Heath Ledgerwho died in 2008 at the age of 28.

“I think it’s a beautiful idea, and the answer now will be yes. It deserves to be remembered.”

Broadway’s musical version has no confirmed release date yet.
