Vocalist reports details of the “beautiful and simple” ceremony that sealed his 35-year relationship with his partner born in Alabama
Since last year, Rob Halford is an officially married man. The vocalist of Judas Priestone of the biggest heavy metal bands in history, recently revealed details of the “beautiful and simple” ceremony held at the singer’s own home, in Arizona, United States.
In a podcast interview Queer the MusicHalford, who has lived with his partner for three decades Thomasbegan economical in words (transcription via Loudwire):
“We got married by the cactus outside (in the backyard) in December, about a year ago.”
And he added, talking about his partner’s “conservatism”:
“He’s from the South. He’s from Alabama — extremely conservative, my God.”
However, later the singer of Judas Priest He loosened up and told how the idea of finally making their relationship official came about. It was Rob’s wish, after all.
“I stopped asking, ‘Are we going to get married?’ [Thomas dizia] ‘No, I don’t want to get married’. [Eu dizia] ‘Oh, let’s get married. We’ve been together forever’. [Thomas dizia] ‘No, I don’t want to get married’. And then suddenly, on one of our evening walks, he said, ‘I think we should get married.’ I went straight home and called for a pastor.”
Halford gave details of the ceremony, restricted to a few people:
“It was obviously me, him and a celebrant, as they call it, who are legal to marry people. Two of my dearest friends, Jim Silvia, who was Priest’s (tour) manager forever, and his wife. There were just four of us around the pool, around the cactus, the heavy metal cactus. And it was over in an instant. But it was a beautiful, simple ceremony.”
Rob Halford and the meaning of marriage
Finally, Metal God reflected on the meaning of marriage:
“You decide whether you think a piece of paper is valuable. In some cases, it is — it’s extremely valuable. But for us, getting married is just good. It’s just a good thing. It feels like you’ve completed something in the relationship, more than anything else. Commitment goes to another level when you get married. It’s a great thing to do. And if it doesn’t work out, that’s life. But I think after 35 years together, it’s working out.”
Revealing homosexuality to the public
Rob Halford came out as gay in 1998. The singer, at the time outside of Judas Priest, spoke about his sexual orientation in an interview with MTV.
After the interview ended, Rob Halford returned to the hotel where he was staying and reflected, as he said Hattie Collinsfrom the Apple Music:
“I went back to the hotel and went to my room and thought, ‘Well, now everyone knows’. And then of course it made the news. And that was it. It was beautiful and not very planned.”
