Netflix is reviving a cult favorite from the early days of the reality TV boom.
The streamer ordered a new version. God, a series of competitions in which one player, “Molly”, works to undermine others. The series, based on the Belgian format, ran for five seasons on ABC, ending in 2008.
Eureka Productions (Holly Molly, name this song) is behind the new version, which will debut on Netflix this fall. On the show, 12 contestants work together on a series of challenges that, if successfully completed, add money to a prize only one of them can win. At the same time, Molly tries to sabotage the other players’ efforts while maintaining her cover as a regular player.
God It debuted on ABC in 2001, with Anderson Cooper hosting the first two seasons. ABC has renewed popular versions of the show for its third and fourth seasons, with Ahmad Rashad as host. The show was inactive for four years before ABC ordered a new season hosted by John Kelly to air in the summer of 2008. The series was canceled after that.
Chris Culvenor, Paul Franklin, Wes Denning, Ricky Proost, David Tibbals and David Burris are executive producers of the Netflix series. It is based on the Belgian format created by Bart De Pauw, Michel Vanhove, Michiel Devlieger and Tom Lenaerts and distributed by Primitives.
