Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Luther’ drops from the Hot 100, leaving the top 40 without rap songs for the first time in 35 years

The SZA-featuring hit topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 13 weeks, but its potential successors in the genre were excluded following rule changes or appear below position 40

The baton that passed from one hip-hop hit to another for more than three decades has been dropped. The hit single “Luther” of Kendrick Lamar and SZA came out of billboard Hot 100 following chart rule changes that removed the song after 46 weeks, of which the song spent 13 weeks at number one. The song was still a Top 40 hit—reaching No. 38 in its final week—but did not maintain a placement at No. 25 or higher after its 26th week on the chart, which, in accordance with the change in the recurrence rule, led to its exclusion.

For the first time since 1990, the Hot 100’s Top 40 does not contain a single rap song. Space is occupied, instead, by the totality of The Life of a Showgirl of Taylor Swift — now in its third week — as well as hits from Morgan Wallen, Olivia Dean, Kehlani and Alex Warrenwhose single “Ordinary” spent 37 weeks on the chart.

A significant portion of the songs in the Top 40 are slow-rising hits, such as “Love Me Not” of Ravyn Lenae or “Mutt” of Leon Thomas. Others, like “Daisies” of Justin Bieber and “Manchild” of Sabrina Carpentermade high debuts and remained.

Still, there are some rap songs hovering just outside the Top 40 that could break through. “Shot Callin” of YoungBoy Never Broke Againwhich debuted on the Hot 100 in late September, has gradually climbed to No. 43. There isn’t much competition in the genre. Other songs on the chart that qualify as rap — determined by songs that are also eligible on the Hot Rap Songs chart, where “Luther” remains in first place — include “Hell At Night” of BigXthaPlug and Ella Langley in position 50, as well as “Safe” of Cardi B and Kehlani in position 57.

It’s worth noting that there are rappers on the Hot 100 who are maintaining placements outside of rap music. “Sugar on the Tongue” of Tyler, the Creatorwhich appears on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, spent 14 weeks on the chart with a peak position of 41 and a current position of 51. A little further down, “Jealous Type” of Doja Cat fell to #57 after peaking at #28 in September.
