Matt Damon has shared his thoughts on today’s film industry and laments that the ‘risque’ films released in the 90s are becoming less and less popular today.
Were the 90s better before? According to actor and producer Matt Damon, yes. At least as far as differentiated film funding is concerned!
In an interview for the Youtube show We are celebrating firstMatt Damon last year highlighted the problem that the end of DVD – driven by the success of streaming platforms – poses to the Hollywood industry as a whole:

DVD used to be a big part of our revenue, but technology has made that obsolete. With the movies we made, we didn’t manage to be a complete success in theaters, and after six months, we recovered with DVD sales. This was almost the second theatrical release. With that model gone, it changed the type of movies we can make.
To make his point, Will Hunting’s translator cites an example from his filmography:
“I made this film, My Life with Liberace (2013). I met with the heads of the studios and told them that the film cost 25 million dollars and I will have to pay the same in advertising and marketing (…), that is, 50 million dollars in total. Now I have to give half of what I collect to the theater managers, so I have to make $100 million before I break even.”
“And the idea of making $100 million with a love story between these two characters (…) is a very difficult bet.”Damon concludes. “It wasn’t like that in the 90s, when we were making these kinds of movies that I love and that I was excited about..
In the end, My Life with Liberace, which went into competition at the Cannes Film Festival, grossed $13.3 million worldwide. In the United States, it was televised live on HBO.
Like Matt Damon, do you decry the lack of risk on the part of the big American movie studios, or are you happy with what’s currently on offer in theaters? Your keyboards!
