What’s the best thing about the Venice Film Festival?
Bertache: The absolutely priceless thing about Venice is that you can always decide to leave the festival and the most beautiful city in the world.
What is your best “only in Venice” experience?
Baraceti: In 2006 we worked as Asian consultants at the festival, because [former artistic director] Marco Müller invited us. It was an incredible, incredible experience.
The only thing I would change about the Venice Film Festival is…
Baraceti: Nothing! Venice is the oldest film festival in the world. That’s perfect!
The most inaccurate cliché about Italians that Venice proves wrong is…
Bertache: Not all Italians dress well. Just the majority.
The best place in Venice to escape the crowds (and the film industry) is…
Barazzetti: Go to the Galleria dell’Accademia museum. And stay there to reflect on Tiepolo’s masterpiece, The Serpent Problem.
The best Venetian food and/or drink is…
Both: “Cicchetti”, forever and ever!
My worst moment in “A Nightmare in Venice” was…
Bertache: It happened some time ago… we were transporting cash registers, money, events all day from the Italian booth. So we were both responsible. We lost our backpack on the vaporetto [or waterbus]. But in the end, thanks to the kindness of the local people, we found it. It was Venice’s nightmare that became Venice’s miracle.
The only thing I won’t be traveling without, besides my phone, is…
Baracetti: A bottle of whiskey.
Bertache: My romantic sense of life!
What was your most emotional encounter with the stars of Venice?
Baracetti: We met Hayao Miyazaki briefly in 2005. It was just a 30-second date. We shook hands and I said, “Thank you, teacher.” He just smiled at me. For a few seconds, pure joy! And, of course, his touch was incredible, smooth: the hands of a genius.
My advice for newbies to Venice is…
Bertacche: Watch as many movies as you can in a day and take notes on each one. You can see six movies a day in Venice. How amazing is that?
In Venice you should always…
Baracetti: Try watching the movie in the Sala Grande with the cast and director. This is the quintessential film festival!
In Venice you should never…
Bertache: Try not to get in the way of the movie at the cinema. Because hundreds of people behind the camera tried to entertain him.
