Two years after overdose, Eminem produced Relapse – and had groundbreaking experience recording
Eminem gave an interview to his manager, Paul Rosenbergin the podcast Paul Pod and reflected on overdose. This conversation is part of a seven-episode series released in August 2022 to celebrate the rapper, as well as Curtain Call 2album that brings together great hits.
“I remember when I got sober and all the shit was out of my system, I remember being really happy and everything was new to me again,” Eminem said of doing relapse (2009) two years later. “It was the first album and the first I’ve had fun recording in a long time.”
“It was like the first time I started having fun with music again and relearning how to rap. You remember this whole process, it took a long time for my brain to start working again,” continued the rapper.
Then, Paul Rosenberg recalled the behind-the-scenes look at his client’s recovery: “You literally came out of an overdose and they had to stabilize you with some medications. And some of them took you a minute to adjust – let’s just leave it at that. So you’re learning to rapping again almost literally, right?
Because it’s probably the first time you’ve been creating without having substances in your body in how many years, right? So it’s a totally different experience. I thought you might have some permanent problems. I was worried for sure.
