Black Panther: Wakanda Foreverthe most anticipated of Marvel Studios’ upcoming films, certainly had a genesis marred by unforeseen circumstances.
The unexpected death of Chadwick Boseman was followed by difficulties due to the security measures established to contain the pandemic of COVID-19, to which was added the rather serious injury of Laetitia Wright that led to the suspension of filming. Now that the film is finished, however, a new problem seems to have arisen in terms of distribution. In fact, Disney will consider iI canceled the release of the movie in France.
But what led to this uncertainty? In the country beyond the Alps, there is a specific law that requires films distributed in theaters to arrive in the catalogs of streaming services only 17 months after their release on the big screen. So far there is no movie of Marvel Cinematic Universe of Phase 4 was released on Disney + in France, probably because of the aforementioned rule.
On the issue, Disney released an official statement that read:
“The media timeline forces us to rate film releases film-by-film. We have not yet made a final decision on the release of Black Panther“.
This isn’t the first time Disney has dealt with this issue, with the company already showing that it has no qualms about canceling a movie’s release. However, audiences have become increasingly accustomed to shorter cinematic release windows and distributions occurring directly via streaming.
That said, Disney and Marvel Studios aren’t the only ones fighting this particular law. If the Mickey Mouse House chooses to hijack Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Direct streaming on Disney +, the first to suffer from the loss of income obtained from collections will be the French exhibitors themselves and their employees.
However, the affair has already claimed its first ‘victim’. As the multinational announced in June, the anticipated new Disney animated film, Strange world, it will not enjoy a release on French territory, but will be distributed directly on streaming. The situation is still ongoing and a final decision is expected in the coming weeks.
