Chris Pratt’s casting as Super Mario in Nintendo’s animated film was not unanimous among fans. The latter was particularly criticized by the US dub star, who wasn’t too convinced by what he heard in the trailer.
On October 6, Nintendo released the first images of the Super Mario Bros. animated film, produced in collaboration with Illumination (Despicable Me, The Minions).
The trailer has excited fans of the mustachioed plumber. English-speaking fans of the character created by Shigeru Miyamoto even named the film VF, specifically the voice of Mario interpreted by Pierre Tessier.
Chris Pratt, who doubles the character in VO, was not unanimous. The actor, who promised the unseen, quite disappointed the fans.
“I worked closely with the directors and tried a lot before arriving at something I’m very proud of. I can’t wait for the audience to see and hear it. It’s a dub of an animated film, not a live-action film.”he noted.
“I’m not going to dress up as a plumber for the whole movie. I’m giving a voice for an animated, updated character, and it’s something you’ve never heard before in the Mario world.”he clarified.
However, after watching the trailer, English-speaking fans weren’t really convinced. The latter simply hear Chris Pratt’s voice on Mario, without a special color, and do not see where “never heard” is there.
In the United States came a big name in dubbing for discontent: Tara Strong. The actor is a legend in the Atlantic Ocean. She is known for having voiced many iconic characters, including Harley Quinn in animated films such as DC Super Hero Girls. He also played a character in the series Arrow.
The 49-year-old Canadian has voiced more than 600 characters in numerous animated series and video games. She can be compared to French actress Dorothe Pousseau, co-star of Dubbing With Us and Margot Robbie’s VF (and thus Harley Quinn).
Tara Strong tweeted a photo with Charles Martinet, the actor who voices Super Mario in the video games.
“It must have been Charles”He made a sober comment, without quoting Chris Pratt, but clearly taking a stand against that choice. The tweet received thousands of likes and caused a lot of backlash, which helped the artist to start a debate about the commitment of Hollywood stars to animated films at the expense of experienced dubbing actors.
“I’ve never understood why they wanted big stars to do it instead of seasoned actors. I’m not going to watch an animated movie because a famous actor is doing the voice of a character. I’d rather it be done right.”said netizen Sarah Earl in response to Tara Strong.
On the French side, there are no big stars of French cinema, but famous actors in the world of dubbing, such as Pierre Tessier (Mario, but also VF Ryan Reynolds), Donald Renineaux (Kamec), Emmanuel Garrijo (Gombe) or Christophe Lemoine (Bowser).
French fans are hoping that this line-up will remain the same for the film’s release on March 29, 2023. However, we’ll wait for the featurette to judge the performance of the dubbing cast as a whole. Chris Pratt might surprise you in a positive way.
