Harry Potter actress apologizes to Emma Watson for her behavior

Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy in “Harry Potter”) has published his autobiography, which includes a mea culpa about his behavior towards Emma Watson (Hermione) on the set of the saga’s first feature film.

Tom Felton, the interpreter of Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter saga, has released an autobiography in which he apparently returns to more or less happy anecdotes from the eight filmings in which he took part. What appears in the American press today is more of a mea culpa.

When filming for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone began in September 2000, Tom Felton was 12 years old. This is the oldest of the young actors with Rupert Grint, who plays Ron: Daniel Radcliffe (Harry) is 11 years old and Emma Watson (Hermione) is 10 years old.

When Josh Herdman (who plays Goyle, one of Draco’s henchmen in Harry Potter) hears that Emma Watson is going to do a little dance demonstration in her dressing room, they go there and “taunt” the young actress. Felton recalls in his book (via Insider):

We laughed at Emma’s performance, peaking when she was dancing. We were just being little jerks, mostly because we were embarrassed and thought our debauchery was cool, but Emma was clearly annoyed by our delicate reaction. I felt stupid, for good reason.

Since then, the actress has forgiven him, he writes, and admits that Emma Watson, during the filming of the Saga films, did not need it at all:

“Emma was the hardest situation to deal with since she was a child. The pressure on her went beyond dealing with stupid boys… she was treated like an adult in many ways. Chosen.”

are unfairly sexualized in the media and elsewhere… the last thing she needed, in an environment that should have been – and usually was – friendly, safe and family friendly, was Josh and I making fun of her dancing. That is why I am ashamed of our behavior.

Draco Malfoy and Hermione’s interpreter have largely reconciled, to the point that Emma Watson signs the foreword to Tom Felton’s book with glowing words and speaks of it as “Soulmate”. He writes:

“You know that person in your life who makes you feel like they’re watching you? That person who’s kind of a witness to everything that’s going on? That person who knows—really knows—what’s going on with you and what’s going on. You’re living without. Anything to say? To me That man is Tom Felton.”
