The Last of Us would have a film produced by Sam Raimi in 2014: ‘Bigger and sexier’

In addition to Sam Raimi’s involvement, The Last of Us movie would have Maisie Williams as Ellie

Long before winning a television series for HBO, The Last of Usiconic video game released in 2013, would win a film produced by Sam Raimidirector of the films Spider man interpreted by Tobey Maguire. However, the project ended up shelved – and will probably never see the light of day.

The reasons for the film’s cancellation are not so clear, but the Twitter account @NaughtyNDC recalled this happened due to conflicts between Neil Druckmanco-creator of the game, and executives at sonyPictures, who wanted to make the film “bigger and sexier” compared to the source material. During podcast conversation Script Apart, druckman talked about the scrapped project.

“When I worked on the film version, many of the thoughts and notes [dos executivos] were like, ‘How can we make it bigger? How do we make the sets bigger? I think that’s why the movie wasn’t made,” said the director and screenwriter.

Additionally, he discussed the independent film style of the creative team for the series. HBOwhich focuses less on action and more on drama.

“Our approach to The Last of Us was, ‘Let’s make this an independent film. We’re going to approach it like an indie film crew, the way it’s shot, how small and intimate it feels. And with the show, we can lean even more towards that, because we don’t need to have as many action sequences as we do in the game.'”
