Amber Heard was forced to add details of her marriage to Johnny Depp in the article

Amber Heard demanded that details of her marriage to actor Johnny Depp be included in an article she wrote about domestic violence, although her lawyers wanted those parts removed from the article, which is now the subject of a libel suit. According to the evidence presented at Thursday’s trial.

The jury heard testimony from Terence Dogert, an adviser to the American Civil Liberties Union, in a defamation suit brought against Deard. It was the ACLU that wrote the article on Herd’s behalf, describing her role as the ACLU’s ambassador for gender-based violence.

Doherty testified that many ACLU attorneys reviewed the article at various stages and asked Herd’s attorneys to review the document to ensure it did not conflict with the couple’s 2016 divorce settlement.

During those discussions, Hurd presented an edited version approved by her attorneys, which “specifically avoided much of her marriage copy,” said a letter from Jessica Weitz, the ACLU coordinator for Hurd.

However, according to the email, Herd was looking for a way to recover the deleted passage in the article.

Jurors were not given a different draft of the articles, so it’s unclear how much personal details were in the first draft and how many of Herd’s lawyers were described.

But the final version contains very little about Herd’s personal experience. Depp is not mentioned. In addition to the excerpt “A public figure representing domestic violence”, he writes in another excerpt: “I had a rare perspective, seeing in real time how institutions protect men accused of violence”.

Much of the article discusses the legislative priorities of domestic violence prevention advocates. Other passages refer to parts of his personal life that are unrelated to Depp.

Doherty confirmed that the “language that ended up in the last article was very different from the original language” in the project. “It wasn’t directly related to Ms. Herd’s relationship with Johnny Depp.”

While the trial must end if Depp slandered the article, very little testimony during the first three weeks, through Thursday, relates to the article itself or its content. Herd’s lawyers had predicted from the beginning of the trial that it would become a soap opera that would delve into the dirty details of Depp and Herd’s private life.

However, Herd’s lawyers said that even if the jury believed that Depp never insulted him, Herd should win the case because the article did not refer to Depp, did not curse him, and gave him free speech. You should weigh issues of public importance, such as domestic violence.

Much of Dogert’s testimony was also based on whether Herd fulfilled his promise to donate $3.5 million, half of Depp’s $7 million divorce settlement, to the ACLU. Doherty confirmed that the ACLU has given him a loan of $1.3 million so far and the amount is expected to flow over 10 years, but that he has not made any contributions since 2018.
