Organizers of the New York Film Festival have unveiled the first official image from Artificial, an upcoming feature film starring Andrew Garfield and Yura Borisov.

The movie, directed by acclaimed Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino, will make its premiere on October 5 at the 64th New York Film Festival. Organizers expect the film's lead cast members, along with Guadagnino and the production team, to attend the festival premiere.

The 2023 OpenAI leadership turmoil

Artificial centers on the turbulent real-life events that shook artificial intelligence developer OpenAI in late 2023. At the time, the head of the organization was abruptly dismissed by the board of directors, only to be reinstated to the leadership position several days later after intense internal and public pressure.

Garfield takes on the lead role of OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman. Borisov portrays his colleague and company co-founder Ilya Sutskever. Meanwhile, actress Monica Barbaro plays OpenAI chief technology officer Mira Murati, rounding out the core trio of corporate figures depicted in the drama.

Acclaimed cast and creative team

Garfield is a British and American actor who gained global fame as Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man franchise and earned Academy Award nominations for his roles in Hacksaw Ridge and Tick, Tick... Boom! Borisov is a prominent Russian actor who recently drew international acclaim for his performance alongside Mikey Madison in Sean Baker's Palme d'Or-winning film Anora.

Barbaro achieved widespread recognition for playing naval aviator Lieutenant Natasha Phoenix Trace in the 2022 action hit Top Gun: Maverick. Director Guadagnino is known for critically praised films such as the Oscar-winning romantic drama Call Me by Your Name, the horror remake Suspiria, and the romantic sports drama Challengers.

OpenAI is the San Francisco-based artificial intelligence research company responsible for developing ChatGPT, the generative AI chatbot that launched in November 2022 and transformed public discussion surrounding artificial intelligence. The 64th New York Film Festival, organized annually by Film at Lincoln Center, will host the film's debut screening on October 5.
