Andrew Garfield was among a group of celebrities on a Delta flight that was forced to divert to Albuquerque this week after an unexpected smell filled the cabin.
Jurassic World actor Nick Robinson, Love Island USA contestant Dylan Wrona, Adults actor Owen Thiele and Belong Together singer Mark Ambor were also on the flight, which was headed from Los Angeles to New York City.
"We apologize to our customers on Delta Flight 958 (LAX to JFK) on Sept 9, which diverted to Albuquerque due to a smoky odor in the aircraft," the airline said in a statement provided to the Daily Mail.
"The aircraft landed uneventfully and our teams worked to reaccommodate customers as quickly as possible to their final destinations," Delta added.
Wrona, 24, posted an airport selfie with Garfield, 43, to his Instagram Stories the day the flight was grounded, captioning it: "Our plane is here to save us."
Nick Robinson, best known for playing Zach Mitchell in the Jurassic World franchise, arrived safely on the east coast in time to attend New York Fashion Week on Thursday.
Owen Thiele's Albuquerque adventure
Thiele, 29, who stars in the Freeform comedy Adults, turned the delay into content, uploading a freewheeling Instagram album recounting how he passed the hours while grounded in New Mexico.
"Andrew Garfield on my flight. If plane went down it would've said Andrew Garfield and others," the A Nonsense Christmas with Sabrina Carpenter guest star wrote. "Nick Robinson here too. Andrew Garfield, Nick Robinson and others."
Thiele managed to make a group of friends from among his fellow passengers, including singer Mark Ambor, 28, while passing time in New Mexico.
The group grabbed drinks at a restaurant inside the Albuquerque International Sunport before heading into town for a brief period.
"In the back of a car going to Dave and busters with nine people I've never met before," Thiele wrote in the caption of one of the selfies he shared from New Mexico.
The group eventually made their way back to the airport and ordered extra food from a local PF Chang's via Uber Eats, only to realize they "had to go through security again to get it in," Thiele noted. When they finally opened the bags, they discovered the wrong food had been delivered, along with a fortune reading: "A thrilling new experience is at your fingertips."
Ambor later posted an Instagram Boomerang of the group, captioning it: "Owen immortalized our Albuquerque experience 4ever."
New friends and a group chat
When he was finally able to board another flight to his final destination, Thiele revealed on Instagram that Robinson was "sitting next to me."
The following day, Thiele gave his followers an update on the silver lining of the ordeal, writing: "Thank u for following along lol i love my new friends we're all in a group chat."
Wrona appeared to have a rougher time with his stretch of free time, posting "Airport bar closed" and asking, "What am I supposed to do for 5.5 hours. Someone help."
Garfield's Sam Altman biopic buzz
The flight fiasco came the same week Garfield fans flocked online to share polarized reactions to the trailer for his upcoming Sam Altman biopic, Artificial.
Directed by Call Me by Your Name filmmaker Luca Guadagnino, the movie centers on the OpenAI chief executive's firing and subsequent rehiring in 2023.
"No one asked for a Sam Altman biopic," one viewer complained online. "Dude got fired for five days and they made a whole Oscar bait movie about it. We live in hell."
Others took a more favorable view, pointing out that Garfield previously played Eduardo Saverin in David Fincher's 2010 Facebook drama The Social Network. "Bro gets to star in a biopic about both Facebook and Open AI," one social media user wrote, while another added: "Andrew Garfield in the two most pivotal and scathing films about tech in the 21st century. Legend."
