Ashley Tisdale tried to divorce husband Christopher French

Actress Ashley Tisdale has revealed that she repeatedly tried to divorce her husband Christopher French while suffering from postpartum depression after welcoming their first child.

The actress, 41, spoke about the strain on her marriage during an appearance on the first episode of French's podcast, Recovering. Tisdale explained that she attempted to divorce French, 44, several times while coping with postpartum depression following the birth of their eldest daughter, Jupiter, who is now five years old.

Tisdale credited her partner's calm demeanour with guiding them through the turbulent period without making mistaken decisions. Speaking directly to French on the podcast, she said that he had dealt with a great deal and that they had struggled throughout that initial year. She admitted that she tried to divorce him so many times, but praised him for remaining centered and calm, noting that he understood they simply needed to let the storm pass.

Anxiety and panic attacks in traffic

During the conversation, Tisdale recalled that she had felt enthusiastic before welcoming her first child. She explained that she was in a phase of life where she felt in control of the anxiety issues she used to experience. However, she was subsequently hit by postpartum depression, which she described as a deeply hormonal condition that rendered all the coping tools she had learned and knew how to use completely unusable.

Her psychological distress also triggered sudden physical reactions during that initial year. The actress recalled experiencing an overwhelming episode where she suffered a panic attack in the middle of traffic during that difficult period.

Two years after Jupiter was born, Tisdale finally learned from a doctor that she had been suffering from postpartum depression throughout that early period. She recalled her complete shock and bewilderment at the news, questioning how medical professionals had failed to identify or explain the condition to her sooner and remarking that she found the delay crazy.

Second pregnancy and background

Her experience changed considerably following the birth of her second child, Emerson, who is currently two years old. Tisdale explained that she experienced only mild symptoms related to childbirth after her second delivery, noting that it was very nice to go through motherhood again without repeating the harrowing ordeal she faced after her first pregnancy.

Tisdale rose to global fame as a Disney Channel actress, achieving worldwide recognition for portraying Sharpay Evans in the smash hit musical franchise High School Musical. French works in the entertainment industry as a musician and composer, producing original scores for television and film productions.

Postpartum depression is a recognised medical condition characterised by prolonged feelings of extreme sadness, anxiety, and exhaustion following childbirth, which can interfere with daily life and family relationships if left unmanaged. The open discussion between Tisdale and French launched his new podcast series, where the pair examined the personal realities of navigating mental health challenges within a marriage.
