Bad Bunny brought his "Debí Tirar Más Fotos World Tour" to a close over the weekend with two shows in San Juan, Puerto Rico, wrapping up a nine-month run that carried him across 115 dates on multiple continents.
The Puerto Rican star, one of the most prominent figures in urban music today, marked the end of the tour with an emotional video shared on his social media accounts, looking back on a journey that began in his childhood.
He said there were things in life that had no explanation, pointing to the giant dream that began in a small bedroom in a neighbourhood in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico. He said the voices in his head that used to scream with excitement whenever he started one of his songs had become real, and that although his dreams no longer fit in that small room, his heart still beat from there. He also recalled the summer his mother told him and his siblings they were going on a trip.
A boy who did not want to leave Puerto Rico
Bad Bunny, whose given name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, recalled that at 10 years old he began to cry when he heard about the trip and told his mother he never wanted to leave Puerto Rico, insisting he would stay there forever. He said his parents laughed at the time, and that he laughs about it too now.
He said that boy had not lied, though. That boy, he said, went on to travel the world, from Mexico to Argentina, from Brazil to Australia, from Japan to Madrid, from France to Germany, and from Portugal to Belgium, all without ever truly leaving Puerto Rico. He said he had taken the island with him wherever he went, its people, his family, its culture and its flag, raising it high in every city he made dance to his rhythm.
He closed the reflection by saying he had won over hearts around the world and turned every corner he played into a piece of Borinquen, the indigenous name for Puerto Rico. He said the boy who dreamed it had fulfilled that dream, remained from Puerto Rico, and had come home to celebrate that he had never truly left.
The 'casita' and ten nights in Madrid
The tour became known in part for its recurring "casita" segment, a space built into the shows where celebrities from different fields made appearances that generated headlines, and at times controversy, at nearly every stop.
The run included no fewer than ten nights at the Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid. Spanish radio station CADENA 100 covered one of those Madrid shows to bring listeners a sense of what happened inside the stadium.
