Fremantle and Fox Entertainment's reboot of "Baywatch" ("Los vigilantes de la playa"), starring "Arrow" actor Stephen Amell, will premiere in January 2027. Amazon's Prime Video will distribute the series internationally, including in Spain, the companies announced.
Amazon and Fremantle reached an agreement covering Canada, Latin America, India and Europe. The deal also brings the original "Baywatch" series and its two-season spinoff, "Baywatch Hawaii," to Prime Video's catalogue.
A "historic" agreement
Michela Di Mondo, Fremantle's executive vice president of international distribution, who negotiated the deal, said the company was delighted to partner with Prime Video to bring the new "Baywatch" to audiences across a range of territories, while also giving fans the chance to revisit the original series they hold so dear.
Di Mondo said few series had caused as much of a stir or had as lasting a cultural impact as "Baywatch." She described the agreement as historic, calling it a key moment for one of the industry's most anticipated launches.
Why the launch was delayed
The reboot had originally been announced for a premiere this year, but Fox pushed the launch back to early 2027, mainly to secure a wider promotional push. The premiere will coincide with the network's midseason showcase and its marketing campaigns, particularly those tied to sports programming.
The plot
The new series centers on Hobie Buchannon, the rebellious character Amell played in the original show, who has since become a captain. Hobie has followed in the footsteps of his legendary father, Mitch, played by David Hasselhoff, but his world is turned upside down when Charlie, played by Jessica Belkin, the daughter he never knew he had, shows up on his doorstep determined to carry on the Buchannon family legacy and become a lifeguard alongside him.
The cast
The main cast also includes Shay Mitchell as Trina, Hassie Harrison as Nat, Thaddeus LaGrone as Brad, Noah Beck as Luke and Brooks Nader as Selene, while Livvy Dunne plays Grace. David Chokachi and Erika Eleniak are reprising their original roles as Cody Madison and Shauni McClain.
Back after two decades off air
The launch marks the return of the "Baywatch" format to television after more than 20 years off the air. The original series ran from 1989 to 2001 and became one of the biggest international audience hits of its era.
With the sequel, the producers are aiming to recapture the spirit of the original drama and win back the mass audience that has kept watching the classic episodes through various broadcast windows over the past two decades.
