American fashion designer Bob Mackie, who created defining stage costumes for iconic music performers including Cher, Tina Turner and Elton John, has died at the age of 87 following a severe bout of pneumonia.
According to a report by The New York Times, the designer passed away on Monday. Over a career spanning more than six decades, Mackie established an unmistakable signature style built around sequins, feathers, rhinestones and sheer fabrics.
Mackie was widely recognized for understanding that when a performer steps onto a red carpet or concert stage, their wardrobe is an integral part of the spectacle. His creations spanned multiple generations of music royalty, defining some of the most famous moments in pop culture history.
Dressing Cher and Tina Turner
Among all his musical collaborators, Cher shared the closest bond with the designer. Their work together began in the 1970s when Mackie started designing costumes for her television show, establishing a creative partnership that would span several decades.
Their most famous collaborations included a sheer feathered dress worn by Cher at the 1974 Met Gala. At the 1986 Academy Awards, Cher made headlines in a pioneering black ensemble featuring an exposed abdomen, a small jeweled top and a massive black feather headpiece.
Cher chose the striking outfit to attract attention as a direct response to criticism over her personal style. Although Mackie designed the garment, he recommended that she not wear it, later admitting that the outfit was not intended to be fashion, but rather a way to have fun.
Mackie also formed a strong working relationship with legendary singer Tina Turner. In 1977, he crafted a gold and silver bodysuit for her featuring large wings and chain fringe that moved with every step she took on stage.
Another iconic ensemble created for Turner was covered in sequins and topped with a giant orange feather headpiece designed to evoke literal flames. Mackie understood that Turner's dresses needed to move dynamically with her legs and turns to enhance her live performance.
High Fashion for Baseball Stadiums and Red Carpets
British singer Sir Elton John similarly sought out Mackie's eye for theatrical showmanship. For John's historic 1974 concert at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, Mackie created a custom Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team uniform completely covered in crystals, paired with a matching crystal cap.
Mackie originally designed the bedazzled baseball uniform as another visual joke for the singer, but he was surprised by the massive cultural impact it generated. John later revived that aesthetic during his farewell tour in 2022 before returning to the stage.
Pop star Madonna also turned to Mackie for a complex design request at the 1991 Academy Awards, asking for a gown inspired by classic Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe. Mackie created a white dress covered in silver beads and rhinestones, which became one of the standout fashion moments of the evening.
Dressing a New Generation of Stars
That same Marilyn Monroe inspired dress was later worn by singer Sabrina Carpenter at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards. Carpenter has since collaborated with Madonna on the song 'Bring Your Love'.
Mackie's vintage aesthetic also reached singer Miley Cyrus, who is an admirer of his work. Cyrus asked to retrieve a vintage black and silver fringed dress from a 2002 collection for one of the most important nights of her career at the 2024 Grammy Awards.
Cyrus wore the fringed gown while performing her hit single 'Flowers' during the broadcast, and she purchased the dress at an auction months later. Cyrus described the performance as a defining moment in her life, having won her first two Grammy Awards that same night for Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance.
